Soma the divine life force:


This is a Sanskrit poetic rendition of the Soma's Divine nature as the vital force of the universe that gives every being it's life. It's deeply hidden in one's core, one who can access it becomes the god.


This stotra is composed in classical Anuṣṭubh, triṣṭubh and jagatī meters. Where these chandas repeat themselves in the systematic manner as mentioned above. The author's note is in Anuṣṭubh and Vasantatilakā meters, making it a perfect conclusion to the Soma Stotram. It captures the divine inspiration, the nature of Soma as consciousness, and the transformative power of its wisdom.


This Soma stotra conveys Soma as the indestructible essence of life and divinity. Unlike mortal things that wither and perish, Soma is eternal, ever-present, and beyond destruction. It does not decay or diminish; rather, it remains luminous within every being, like an immortal flame.


Those who turn inward and dwell deeply within their hearts will perceive Soma's divine reality. This realization is not just an intellectual understanding, but a profound spiritual awakening—one that liberates the seeker from the cycle of birth and death (saṁsāra).


The verses implie that Soma is not just an external substance but the very essence of immortality within us. When one realizes this inner Soma through deep meditation and inner vision, one transcends the illusion of the material world and attains mokṣa (liberation from rebirth).


Philosophical & Yogic Significance


1. Soma as the Eternal Life-Force:


These verses align with Vedantic and Yogic teachings that the divine presence (Soma/Brahma- tejas) exists eternally within all beings.


It is not subject to birth, destruction, or change—it is pure consciousness itself.


2. Meditation & Self-Realization:


By focusing on Soma within the heart, the seeker moves beyond external rituals and begins an inner journey toward direct perception of the divine.


This direct realization leads to freedom from karma and rebirth.


3. Liberation from the Cycle of Birth & Death:


The goal of all spiritual paths is to break free from ignorance (avidyā) and transcend saṁsāra.


These verses state that one who realizes Soma within the heart attains ultimate liberation—a state of eternal peace and union with the infinite.


सोमस्तोत्रम्:


सोमः पिबन्ति देवानां, सोमः पिबति मानवः।

सोमे सत्यं सोम आत्मा, सोमो हि परमं सुखम्॥१॥


चन्द्रार्करश्मिं तमसा विमुक्तं, सोमं सनं रोधसि यं नमन्ति।

अग्नेरिव द्युतिमयं प्रसन्नं, पिबन्ति विप्राः ऋषयो जिताशाः॥२॥


इन्द्राय सोमं मधुमन्तमुत्तमं, वरुणाय दत्तं दिव्यमृषिभिः।

यत्राश्विना द्वे परमे समीहिते, नक्तंच सोमः परिभाति देवतः॥३॥


सुगन्धिनं सोमरसं पिबन्ति, ब्रह्मर्षयः सिद्धगणाश्च योगिनः।

अमृतं हि तत्सर्वजगत्प्रदीप्तं, सोमः सदा जीवनमङ्गलं च॥४॥


आशा दिशः सोममयं विभान्ति, व्योम्नि सोमः सोम इह प्रवाहः।

सर्वं समं सोमरसस्य जातं, यत्रास्ति शुद्धिर्नहि जन्ममृत्यू॥५॥


देवेभ्यः सोमः स्वपथे समर्पितः, मन्त्रैः सुपूतो हविषा प्रयुज्यते।

यः सोममादाय सुशुद्धिबुद्धिभिः, प्रज्ञानयोगे च परं समश्नुते॥६॥


यज्ञेषु सोमः सुरदाननाय, हृद्यं पवित्रं मधुपूर्णमात्मनः।

नक्तं च दिव्यं सोमरसस्य, तेजो हि तस्मिन्सततं समाहितम्॥७॥


ह्रदेषु सिन्धुषु नदीषु पुण्ये, सोमः प्रसन्नः स्वगुणैः प्रबुद्धः।

आशिष्महे त्वां हृदि शुद्धभावं, ददासि नः सोमपथे प्रकाशम्॥८॥


ऋग्यजुःसामाथर्वविदां यतो रसः, यज्ञस्य मूलं धृतिमस्य संगतम्।

सोमेन विश्वं प्रचलं समाहितं, सर्वं हि सोमो हृदये विभाति॥९॥


सोमः शरीरं प्रविशन्नुपायन्, प्राणो हि सोमो मनसश्च कारणम्।

सोमेऽन्तरात्मा प्रविभाति तेजः, सोमो हि जीवन्यशुनाय संश्रितः॥१०॥


नाड्यः सन्तः सोमरसस्य वाहाः, स्रोतांसि यत्र प्रवहन्ति पुण्या।

हृदि स्थितः सोममयोऽन्तरात्मा, यत्रैव चेतः स्वविचारमेत॥११॥


ह्रदेषु कोशेषु विलीयते सदा, सोमो हि धातुः प्रचलत्यपि क्षणात्।

मर्मेषु गूढं सततं प्रकाशते, सोमः स एवात्मविदः प्रकाशकः॥१२॥


नास्याम्, न नेत्रे, न जिह्वायां सोमः, तस्मिन्प्रकाशे हृदि वै लभेत।

गूढः स देहे सुषिरं प्रविष्टः, सोमो हि योगे परमा गतिर्भवेत्॥१३॥


मर्त्योऽपि सोमेन चिरं प्रवृद्धः, सर्वेन्द्रियाणि स्ववशे नयेत।

सोमः सुधीभिः प्रथितः सनातनः, यस्मै स दत्तः स परं पवित्रम्॥१४॥


देवानि धत्ते हृदये सुशीतलं, सोमो हि सूक्ष्मं मनसोऽन्तरं गतः।

यत्र प्रविश्यामृततां च गच्छति, तस्मै नमः सोममयाय धीमहे॥१५॥


योगेऽधिगम्यं परिशुद्धभावं, सोमं पिबन्तः परमं समेति।

सोमो हि शान्तिं परमा प्रकाशं, दत्त्वा च मोक्षं करुणां प्रदत्ते॥१६॥


यः सोमपानेन समं विचारं, कृत्वा च योगे हृदयं निरुद्धम्।

स सर्वमेतत् परिशुद्धमेत्य, सोमात्मनैवैक्यमुपैति भक्तः॥१७॥


अङ्गेषु सोमः परिभाति नित्यतः, नास्य विनाशो न च संक्षयः क्वचित्।

तं भावयित्वा हृदयस्य मध्यतः, यः पश्यति स्यान्न पुनर्भवाय वै॥१८॥


सोमेन शुद्धिं लभते हि चेतः, सोमेन सिद्धिं लभते च योगी।

सोमो हि सत्यं परमं हि तेजः, सोमः स्वयं ब्रह्म सदा विभाति॥१९॥


लेखकस्य निवेदनम्:


उषसि जागर्ति मनः प्रशान्तं, शान्ते जगत्यां निनदं विनष्टे।

वेदस्य घोषाः हृदि संप्रविष्टाः, सोमस्य गीतं मम बुद्धिरेषा॥१॥


न सोम आहुर्नहि केवलं द्रवो, न यज्ञकर्मण्यमृतस्य साधनम्।

चैतन्यमेवात्र विभाति नित्यं, सर्वस्य सूत्रं जठरे स्फुरन्तम्॥२॥


नाहं कवेः कश्चिदपि प्रणेता, स्वयमेव सोमो मयि प्रत्यभाषत्।

यथा हि सूर्यो हसितं प्रकाशं, विभाति नक्ते स्फुटमप्रकाशे॥३॥


सोमः सदा हृदि यस्य तिष्ठेत्, नायं पुनर्जन्मभयं प्रपन्नः।

यः तं समायाति समाधियोगे, स ब्रह्मभूतोऽखिलबन्धमुक्तः॥४॥


यः साधकः सोममुपासते हि, श्रद्धान्वितः ज्ञानतपोभिशुद्धः।

स ध्यायमानः परमं प्रकाशं, स्यादेव मुक्तोऽमृतयोगयुक्तः॥५॥


इत्येतदुक्तं मम योगबुद्ध्या, सोमस्य वाक्यानि न सृष्टिरिष्टा।

तस्मात्पठन्तः सुकृतेषु जन्तवः, सोमं स्वहृद्येऽधिगमं लभन्ते॥६॥

(प्रभाते लिखितं यत्र तमः विनश्यति, सत्यं प्रवर्धते च।)


somastotram:


somaḥ pibanti devānāṃ, somaḥ pibati mānavaḥ|

some satyaṃ soma ātmā, somo hi paramaṃ sukham||1||


candrārkaraśmiṃ tamasā vimuktaṃ, somaṃ sanaṃ rodhasi yaṃ namanti|

agneriva dyutimayaṃ prasannaṃ, pibanti viprāḥ ṛṣayo jitāśāḥ||2||


indrāya somaṃ madhumantamuttamaṃ, varuṇāya dattaṃ divyamṛṣibhiḥ|

yatrāśvinā dve parame samīhite, naktaṃca somaḥ paribhāti devataḥ||3||


sugandhinaṃ somarasaṃ pibanti, brahmarṣayaḥ siddhagaṇāśca yoginaḥ|

amṛtaṃ hi tatsarvajagatpradīptaṃ, somaḥ sadā jīvanamaṅgalaṃ ca||4||


āśā diśaḥ somamayaṃ vibhānti, vyomni somaḥ soma iha pravāhaḥ|

sarvaṃ samaṃ somarasasya jātaṃ, yatrāsti śuddhirnahi janmamṛtyū||5||


devebhyaḥ somaḥ svapathe samarpitaḥ, mantraiḥ supūto haviṣā prayujyate|

yaḥ somamādāya suśuddhibuddhibhiḥ, prajñānayoge ca paraṃ samaśnute||6||


yajñeṣu somaḥ suradānanāya, hṛdyaṃ pavitraṃ madhupūrṇamātmanaḥ|

naktaṃ ca divyaṃ somarasasya, tejo hi tasminsatataṃ samāhitam||7||


hradeṣu sindhuṣu nadīṣu puṇye, somaḥ prasannaḥ svaguṇaiḥ prabuddhaḥ|

āśiṣmahe tvāṃ hṛdi śuddhabhāvaṃ, dadāsi naḥ somapathe prakāśam||8||


ṛgyajuḥsāmātharvavidāṃ yato rasaḥ, yajñasya mūlaṃ dhṛtimasya saṃgatam|

somena viśvaṃ pracalaṃ samāhitaṃ, sarvaṃ hi somo hṛdaye vibhāti||9||


somaḥ śarīraṃ praviśannupāyan, prāṇo hi somo manasaśca kāraṇam|

some’ntarātmā pravibhāti tejaḥ, somo hi jīvanyaśunāya saṃśritaḥ||10||


nāḍyaḥ santaḥ somarasasya vāhāḥ, srotāṃsi yatra pravahanti puṇyā|

hṛdi sthitaḥ somamayo’ntarātmā, yatraiva cetaḥ svavicārameta||11||


hradeṣu kośeṣu vilīyate sadā, somo hi dhātuḥ pracalatyapi kṣaṇāt|

marmeṣu gūḍhaṃ satataṃ prakāśate, somaḥ sa evātmavidaḥ prakāśakaḥ||12||


nāsyām, na netre, na jihvāyāṃ somaḥ, tasminprakāśe hṛdi vai labheta|

gūḍhaḥ sa dehe suṣiraṃ praviṣṭaḥ, somo hi yoge paramā gatirbhavet||13||


martyo’pi somena ciraṃ pravṛddhaḥ, sarvendriyāṇi svavaśe nayeta|

somaḥ sudhībhiḥ prathitaḥ sanātanaḥ, yasmai sa dattaḥ sa paraṃ pavitram||14||


devāni dhatte hṛdaye suśītalaṃ, somo hi sūkṣmaṃ manaso’ntaraṃ gataḥ|

yatra praviśyāmṛtatāṃ ca gacchati, tasmai namaḥ somamayāya dhīmahe||15||


yoge’dhigamyaṃ pariśuddhabhāvaṃ, somaṃ pibantaḥ paramaṃ sameti|

somo hi śāntiṃ paramā prakāśaṃ, dattvā ca mokṣaṃ karuṇāṃ pradatte||16||


yaḥ somapānena samaṃ vicāraṃ, kṛtvā ca yoge hṛdayaṃ niruddham|

sa sarvametat pariśuddhametya, somātmanaivaikyamupaiti bhaktaḥ||17||


aṅgeṣu somaḥ paribhāti nityataḥ, nāsya vināśo na ca saṃkṣayaḥ kvacit|

taṃ bhāvayitvā hṛdayasya madhyataḥ, yaḥ paśyati syānna punarbhavāya vai||18||


somena śuddhiṃ labhate hi cetaḥ, somena siddhiṃ labhate ca yogī|

somo hi satyaṃ paramaṃ hi tejaḥ, somaḥ svayaṃ brahma sadā vibhāti||19||


lekhakasya nivedanam:


uṣasi jāgarti manaḥ praśāntaṃ, śānte jagatyāṃ ninadaṃ vinaṣṭe|

vedasya ghoṣāḥ hṛdi saṃpraviṣṭāḥ, somasya gītaṃ mama buddhireṣā||1||


na soma āhurnahi kevalaṃ dravo, na yajñakarmaṇyamṛtasya sādhanam|

caitanyamevātra vibhāti nityaṃ, sarvasya sūtraṃ jaṭhare sphurantam||2||


nāhaṃ kaveḥ kaścidapi praṇetā, svayameva somo mayi pratyabhāṣat|

yathā hi sūryo hasitaṃ prakāśaṃ, vibhāti nakte sphuṭamaprakāśe||3||


somaḥ sadā hṛdi yasya tiṣṭhet, nāyaṃ punarjanmabhayaṃ prapannaḥ|

yaḥ taṃ samāyāti samādhiyoge, sa brahmabhūto’khilabandhamuktaḥ||4||


yaḥ sādhakaḥ somamupāsate hi, śraddhānvitaḥ jñānatapobhiśuddhaḥ|

sa dhyāyamānaḥ paramaṃ prakāśaṃ, syādeva mukto’mṛtayogayuktaḥ||5||


ityetaduktaṃ mama yogabuddhyā, somasya vākyāni na sṛṣṭiriṣṭā|

tasmātpaṭhantaḥ sukṛteṣu jantavaḥ, somaṃ svahṛdye’dhigamaṃ labhante||6||

Hymn to Soma as the divine life force – A Poetic English Explanation:


Soma is the nectar the gods imbibe,

The elixir that keeps the mortals alive.

In Soma, truth forever shines,

A soul divine, a bliss sublime.


Soma, a light freed from the night,

A glow of moon and sun so bright.

The sages drink its golden rays,

Their minds unchained in wisdom’s gaze.


To Indra’s hands the Soma flows,

A gift divine, as scriptures show.

Aśvinī twins seek its embrace,

Its glow illuminates all space.


Its fragrance fills the temple air,

Soma cools the heart’s embrace,

A subtle force in time and space.

Those who taste its boundless sea,

Shall find themselves forever free.


Through yoga’s light its taste is known,

In Soma’s heart, the truth is shown.

It grants release from worldly snare,

A gift of peace beyond compare.


Who drinks with thought so pure, so deep,

Shall wake from Maya’s endless sleep.

In Soma’s soul, all selves dissolve,

One with the truth, they shall evolve.


Soma shines in every limb, a light that never fades nor wanes.

It is eternal, undying, beyond the grasp of decay or time.

He who contemplates it within, at the heart’s most sacred core,

Sees the truth and breaks all chains, to be reborn no more.


Through Soma’s touch the mind is bright,

A beacon burning endless light.

Soma is truth, the highest flame,

The cosmic Brahman’s golden name.

A whisper through my soul remained.

From Vedic depths the verses came,

Like Soma’s fire, a golden flame.


Not words alone, but truth untold,

In Soma’s stream, both young and old,

Shall drink, shall rise, shall see the way,

Where night departs, and dawn shall stay.


Let those who seek, with open mind,

This nectar’s glow within them find.

For Soma lives, and Soma sings,

In hearts of sages, gods, and kings.
