Puri Jagannatha is none but lord Narasimha:

Original utsava mūrti of Jagannātha was the small wooden pillar that is known as Sudarśana in present times. It is still used as the utsava mūrti for specific occasions. In two ways this contributes to the original identity of the deity as Narasiṁha.

1. All Sudarśana mūrtis have Narasiṁha embedded in the back indicating aikya of Sudarśana and Narasiṁha.

2. In the Purī temple for most occasions a Narasiṁha idol is used as the utsava mūrti of dāru sudarśana, implying by extension original dāru vigraha is the one of Narasiṁha.

The Puruṣottama kṣetra mahātmya of Skanda purāṇa also denotes that when Brahmā consecrated the idols with Narasiṁha Mantra Rāja the wooden idols vanished and in that place appeared Urga Narasiṁha. Brahmā then advised Rājā Indradyumna, to worship him with the same mantra rāja. Then that Ugra Narasiṁha manifets Himself as Yoga Lakṣmī Narasiṁha seated on Ādi Śeṣa on a 32 petal lotus flower.

Older Oriya sources in the manuscript form by the deula-karaṇas of the Purī temple (one called the rāja-bhoga is being referred to here) also corraborate a ritual practice of Balabhadra being worshipped with the Vāsudeva mantra (although presumably with the śaiva Śrīkaṇṭhādi nyāsa), Jagannātha with the Narasiṁha anuṣtubh mantra-rāja,and Subhadrā with the Bhuvaneśvarī ekākṣarī(single syllabled mantra). So this was the most likely practice before the second half of the 15th century. Some circles (and presumably the ones who did the pūjā rituals of the Purī temple,if not the general public of that era), believe that Jagannātha was considered as Narasiṁha.

Only after during the king Puruṣottama Deva ̍s reign in second half of 15th Century when Gopālārcana Paddhati was written wherein Jagannātha was identified as Gopījanavallabha Kṛṣṇa, His identity as Narasiṁha was subdued in the favor of his original identity as Puruṣottama Narasiṁha.

🙏 Namo Narasimha 🙏
