Origins of Batuka Bhairava:

Among different forms of Bhairava, Vaṭuka is the form of Bhairava in the form of a Brahmacārin, or a young celibate boy. In the Skanda Yāmala Tantra it is stated that the worship of Guru, Gaṇapati, Vaṭuka are of prime importance for attaining siddhi of any Śākta mantra. Bhairava Vaṭuka is described as of having sāttvika, rājasika, tāmasika forms. However, the popular dhyāna of Vaṭuka runs thus...

vaṭukaṁ bālaveṣaṁ ca nāgayojñopavītinaṁ kapāla śūla bhūṣāḍhyāṁ svayūthaiḥ pariveṣṭitam

kukkurair nava varṇaiśca veṣṭitaṁ brahma rūpiṇam dvādaśāra sthitaṁ devaṁ pratyakṣa phaladaṁ kalau pretāsana samāsīnaṁ trailokya jayadaṁ bhaje

The origin of the Bhairava named Vaṭuka is mentioned in the Śākta Tantras as follows. It is said once the universe was over run with various, divine, semi divine, demonic entities such as bhūtas, piśācas, vetālas, kūṣmāṇḍas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, kinnaras, gandharvas and grahas. These beings had devided themselves in to Brāhma, Vaiṣṇava, Raudra, Aindra, Gāṇapatya, Kaumāra, Śaiva, Pāśupata categories and were gaṇas of these respective devatās.

But they created havoc in the world by stealing the japa phala of different sādhakas.

For the protection of upāsakas from such entities and to protect their sādhana Bhagavati Ādyā Kali bore the form of Vaṭuka form.

vetālādyā mahādevi japa pūjādi hārakaḥ

teṣāṁ vināśanārthāya bhaktānugrahanāya ca vaṭuko ayaṁ maheśāni mahākālyā vibhāvitaḥ

The form and essence of Vaṭuka Bhairava was derived from the collective tejas of innumerable Yoginīs, Bhairavas and Mahāvidyās. And also various manifestations of Kālī, Tārā, Tripurasundarī, Bālā, Chinnamastā, Bagalā, Dhūmāvatī and Mātaṅgi.

pañcāśatakoṭi gaṇanā yoginīṇaṁ tu koṭiśaḥ bhairavānāṁ koṭi koṭir mahāvidyās tvanekaśaḥ trikharva saṁkhyā tārā syāt kālī daśārbudā śive kalā koṭi prabhedā tu sundarī tena saṁyutā balā trikoṭisaṁkhyābhiś chinnā ṣoḍaśa kharvataḥ ṣaḍ viṁśa lakṣa brahmāstraiścan draṣoḍaśa māyutā koṭi dvādaśabhir devi bhuvanāṁśana pārvati dhūmrakalālakṣabhedaiḥ siddhavidyākhya tattvataḥ caturāśita lakṣaiśca mātaṅgī mantrataḥ śive etat sarva mayaṁ tejaḥ sarva brahmāṇḍa rūpa dhṛk sarva tejaḥ samdbhūtaṁ vaṭu rūpaṁ sanātanam l

From the congregation of tejas emanating from the Vaṭuka was created by Ādyā Mahākāli. He was endowed with the potency of trimūrtis along with their respective śaktis. Thus he is known as guṇatraya svarūpavān. He has three forms corresponding to triguṇas along with ten other forms as consorts of Daśa mahāvidyās of Śakti.

After his appearance Devi Ugra Tāra endowed him with a vyāla yajñopavīta. Devi Chinnamastā bestows him with a kapāla pātra and mastership over time was awarded by Bhagavati Kālikā. These tridevis also bestows him with a triśūla to preside over these Śakti traya. A group of siddhas assume the form of nine dogs and started to serve him. Ādyā Kāli also reveals that he is a form of Śiva. Vaṭuka is bestowed lordship over all grahas thus his upāsaka will not suffer from the badhās presented by them.
