Shri Vidyarnav Tantra, Maha Nirvana Tantra Kularnav Tantra, Tantra Saar Diksha Rahasya etc. talks about mutual examination of Guru and disciple which can be known by studying the original texts. The basic purpose of testing is to communicate knowledge easily, along with it the aim is to prevent misuse of knowledge.
Just as water flows from high to low and heat from high temperature to low temperature, electric current flows from high potential to low potential easily, in the same way, the smooth flow of learning occurs spontaneously in a disciple who is loyal and dedicated towards the Guru. The scriptures instruct that the Guru should repeatedly insult the aspiring disciple, he should say bitter words to him, if he still continues to follow the Guru, then the Guru should give him diksha.
Along with being loyal to the Guru, it is also necessary for the disciple to be of good character, healthy and noble. In Tantras, the way the Guru tests the disciple's eligibility, in the same way, the disciple should also test the Guru before taking the initiation.
Some parameters for judging the worthiness of the Guru:
1 - Having the knowledge of guru lineage or tradition.
2 - If a shakta guru then he should be Kaul Margi and ought to be minimum Purna bhishikta so that he is able to provide all the mantras.
3 - Should be selfless, and not greedy.
4 - Householder with wife and children or properly sanyāsa dharma following monk.
5 - Should know the process of subtle communication.
6 - Should be easily able to recognize the mind-set of the disciple.
7 - He should be knowledgeable in shrutis and smrutis equally and noble.
8 - Should be a staunch follower of Varna vyavastha .
9 - Should not be of a caste lower than the disciple so that he never has feelings of jealousy or envy towards him.
10 - should not be doing the business out of spirituality.
11- In spite of being a seeker with the highest accomplishments, he should have a completely calm and composed mind.
12. Should possess siddhis and should be able to solve the problem of disciples with upadesh as well as kriya.
13. Should follow whatever he preaches.
14. Should have highest regards for the shastras.
Search for the above lakshanas in the guru from whom you want to take diksha so that you won't feel cheated later. Finally siddhis and accomplishments depend upon one's rigorous sadhana which is facilitated by guru and ishta Krupa. If your guru has all of the above mentioned qualities and still you're not getting the desired results then accept that fault lies in yourself, simply don't keep blaming everyone else.
