Indra - The giver of Knowledge for Action:

We will give here several phrases indicating Indra's help in
guiding the intellect and thoughts of jivas.
1) "Indra the seer, is the supporter of all actions in the universe", (1.11.4);
kaviḥ amitaujā ajāyata indro vishvasya karmano dhartā (1.11.4)
क॒विरमि॑तौजा अजायत । इन्द्रो॒ विश्व॑स्य॒ कर्म॑णो ध॒र्ता ।
2) "Thoughts shaped for you", (brahma kriyamaṇa), (5.29.15);
indra̱ brahma̍ kri̱yamā̍ṇā juṣasva̱ yā te̍ śaviṣṭha̱ navyā̱ aka̍rma .
vastre̍va bha̱drā sukṛ̍tā vasū̱yū ratha̱ṃ na dhīra̱ḥ svapā̍ atakṣam, (5.29.15)
इन्द्र॒ ब्रह्म॑ क्रि॒यमा॑णा जुषस्व॒ या ते॑ शविष्ठ॒ नव्या॒ अक॑र्म ।
वस्त्रे॑व भ॒द्रा सुकृ॑ता वसू॒यू रथं॒ न धीरः॒ स्वपा॑ अतक्षम् ॥ ५.०२९.१५
3) "Remove darkness from the heart of man", (hrdo varathaḥ
tamāmsi) (5.31.9);
indrā̍kutsā̱ vaha̍mānā̱ rathe̱nā vā̱matyā̱ api̱ karṇe̍ vahantu .
niḥ ṣī̍ma̱dbhyo dhama̍tho̱ niḥ ṣa̱dhasthā̍nma̱ghono̍ hṛ̱do va̍ratha̱stamā̍ṃsi, (5.31.9)
इन्द्रा॑कुत्सा॒ वह॑माना॒ रथे॒ना वा॒मत्या॒ अपि॒ कर्णे॑ वहन्तु ।
निः षी॑म॒द्भ्यो धम॑थो॒ निः ष॒धस्था॑न्म॒घोनो॑ हृ॒दो व॑रथ॒स्तमां॑सि ॥ ५.०३१.०९
4) "You have the highest vision of light", (upamām ketum) (5.34.9);
sa̱ha̱sra̱sāmāgni̍veśiṃ gṛṇīṣe̱ śatri̍magna upa̱māṃ ke̱tuma̱ryaḥ .
tasmā̱ āpa̍ḥ sa̱ṃyata̍ḥ pīpayanta̱ tasmi̍nkṣa̱tramama̍vattve̱ṣama̍stu, (5.34.9)
स॒ह॒स्र॒सामाग्नि॑वेशिं गृणीषे॒ शत्रि॑मग्न उप॒मां के॒तुम॒र्यः ।
तस्मा॒ आपः॑ सं॒यतः॑ पीपयन्त॒ तस्मि॑न्क्ष॒त्रमम॑वत्त्वे॒षम॑स्तु ॥ ५.०३४.०९
5) "You awaken (chiketa) the knowledge of the treasure", (vasūnam) (5.36.1);
sa ā ga̍ma̱dindro̱ yo vasū̍nā̱ṃ cike̍ta̱ddātu̱ṃ dāma̍no rayī̱ṇām .
dha̱nva̱ca̱ro na vaṃsa̍gastṛṣā̱ṇaśca̍kamā̱naḥ pi̍batu du̱gdhama̱ṃśum, (5.36.1)
स आ ग॑म॒दिन्द्रो॒ यो वसू॑नां॒ चिके॑त॒द्दातुं॒ दाम॑नो रयी॒णाम् ।
ध॒न्व॒च॒रो न वंस॑गस्तृषा॒णश्च॑कमा॒नः पि॑बतु दु॒ग्धमं॒शुम् ॥ ५.०३६.०१
6) "Indra sharpens my intellect", (dhiyam chodaya) (6.47.10);
indra̍ mṛ̱l̤a mahya̍ṃ jī̱vātu̍miccha co̱daya̱ dhiya̱maya̍so̱ na dhārā̍m .
yatkiṃ cā̱haṃ tvā̱yuri̱daṃ vadā̍mi̱ tajju̍ṣasva kṛ̱dhi mā̍ de̱vava̍ntam, (6.47.10)
इन्द्र॑ मृ॒ळ मह्यं॑ जी॒वातु॑मिच्छ चो॒दय॒ धिय॒मय॑सो॒ न धारा॑म् ।
यत्किं चा॒हं त्वा॒युरि॒दं वदा॑मि॒ तज्जु॑षस्व कृ॒धि मा॑ दे॒वव॑न्तम् ॥ ६.०४७.१०
7) "Creates right mentality in man for winning the plenty", (sumatim
vajasātau) (5.33.1);
mahi̍ ma̱he ta̱vase̍ dīdhye̱ nṝnindrā̍ye̱tthā ta̱vase̱ ata̍vyān .
yo a̍smai suma̱tiṃ vāja̍sātau stu̱to jane̍ sama̱rya̍ści̱keta̍, (5.33.1)
महि॑ म॒हे त॒वसे॑ दीध्ये॒ नॄनिन्द्रा॑ये॒त्था त॒वसे॒ अत॑व्यान् ।
यो अ॑स्मै सुम॒तिं वाज॑सातौ स्तु॒तो जने॑ सम॒र्य॑श्चि॒केत॑ ॥ ५.०३३.०१
8) "O Indra, may we hold in thought the inspired knowledge
that is the supreme good". (5.35.8)
vayam shavishtha vāryam divi shravo dadhimahi
वयं शविष्ठ वार्यं दिवि श्रवो॑ दधीमहि ।।
(5.35.8)
9) "Of varied lustre", (chitrabhānu) (1.3.4);
indrā yā̍hi citrabhāno su̱tā i̱me tvā̱yava̍ḥ .
aṇvī̍bhi̱stanā̍ pū̱tāsa̍ḥ, (1.3.4)
इन्द्रा या॑हि चित्रभानो सु॒ता इ॒मे त्वा॒यवः॑ ।
अण्वी॑भि॒स्तना॑ पू॒तासः॑ ॥ १.००३.०४
10) "Impelled by thought", (dhiyeshita) (1.3.5);
indrā yā̍hi dhi̱yeṣi̱to vipra̍jūtaḥ su̱tāva̍taḥ.
upa̱ brahmā̍ṇi vā̱ghata̍ḥ, (1.3.5)
इन्द्रा या॑हि धि॒येषि॒तो विप्र॑जूतः सु॒ताव॑तः ।
उप॒ ब्रह्मा॑णि वा॒घतः॑ ॥ १.००३.०५
11) "Driven forward by the illumined thinker", (vipra jūta) (1.3.5);
indrā yā̍hi dhi̱yeṣi̱to vipra̍jūtaḥ su̱tāva̍taḥ.
upa̱ brahmā̍ṇi vā̱ghata̍ḥ, (1.3.5)
इन्द्रा या॑हि धि॒येषि॒तो विप्र॑जूतः सु॒ताव॑तः ।
उप॒ ब्रह्मा॑णि वा॒घतः॑ ॥ १.००३.०५
12) "Of clear seeing intelligence", (vipaschitam) (1.4.4)
pare̍hi̱ vigra̱mastṛ̍ta̱mindra̍ṃ pṛcchā vipa̱ścita̍m .
yaste̱ sakhi̍bhya̱ ā vara̍m, (1.4.4)
परे॑हि॒ विग्र॒मस्तृ॑त॒मिन्द्रं॑ पृच्छा विप॒श्चित॑म् ।
यस्ते॒ सखि॑भ्य॒ आ वर॑म् ॥ १.००४.०४
These epithets cannot be explained if we regard Indra as only rainmaker or as a warring chieftain.
Knowledge for Sceptics:
Indra gives his knowledge not merely to his devotees, he helps the sceptics also. Nema, a sceptic, declares,
"There is no Indra; who has ever seen him?" (8.100.3). Indra replies:
13) "Here am I, adorer! Look upon me here! (1)
All that exists I surpass in my glory (2).
The Truth makes me mighty (3);
And I also rend the worlds asunder (4)". (8.100.4)
nendro̍ a̱stīti̱ nema̍ u tva āha̱ ka ī̍ṃ dadarśa̱ kama̱bhi ṣṭa̍vāma, (8.100.3)
a̱yama̍smi jarita̱ḥ paśya̍ me̱ha viśvā̍ jā̱tānya̱bhya̍smi ma̱hnā .
ṛ̱tasya̍ mā pra̱diśo̍ vardhayantyādardi̱ro bhuva̍nā dardarīmi, (8.100.4)
नेन्द्रो॑ अ॒स्तीति॒ नेम॑ उ त्व आह॒ क ईं॑ ददर्श॒ कम॒भि ष्ट॑वाम ॥ ८.१००.०३
अ॒यम॑स्मि जरितः॒ पश्य॑ मे॒ह विश्वा॑ जा॒तान्य॒भ्य॑स्मि म॒ह्ना ।
ऋ॒तस्य॑ मा प्र॒दिशो॑ वर्धयन्त्यादर्दि॒रो भुव॑ना दर्दरीमि ॥ ८.१००.०४
Knowledge by Identity :
In the Upanishads, there is the mention of obtaining knowledge by
complete identity. This idea is also mentioned in Vedas. We give the
experience of the Rshi Vämadeva:
14) "I became Manu, I am Surya,
(4.26.1)
a̱haṃ manu̍rabhava̱ṃ sūrya̍ścā̱haṃ ka̱kṣīvā̱m̐ ṛṣi̍rasmi̱ vipra̍ḥ .
a̱haṃ kutsa̍mārjune̱yaṃ nyṛ̍ñje̱'haṃ ka̱viru̱śanā̱ paśya̍tā mā, (4.26.1)
अ॒हं मनु॑रभवं॒ सूर्य॑श्चा॒हं क॒क्षीवा॒ँ ऋषि॑रस्मि॒ विप्रः॑ ।
अ॒हं कुत्स॑मार्जुने॒यं न्यृ॑ञ्जे॒ऽहं क॒विरु॒शना॒ पश्य॑ता मा ॥ ४.०२६.०१
15) "I give earth to the Aryan man (1),
I rain the strength to the mortal
who gives (2);
I bring the waters sounding (3),
the gods move according to the perceptions of my mind (4)". (4.26.2)
aham bhumim adadāt āryaya (1),
aham vṛshtim dashuşhe martyāya (2), aham apo anayam vävashǎnǎ (3),
mama devāso anu ketamayan (4) (4.26.2)
अ॒हं भूमि॑मददा॒माया॑या ऽहं वृष्टिं दाशुषे मत्यय ।
अ॒हम॒पो अ॑नयं वावशा॒ाना मम॑ दे॒वासो॒ अनु॒ केत॑मायन् ।। ४.०२६.०२
